Radio Hamburg and the myth of the water tower

N stands un "Radio Hamburg" not just suspected to fulfill an educational mission. Rather, it is piping and shallow content stingy to himself. Nevertheless, it irritated a bit, if the private channel specifically in the heart of his district, "the most beautiful city in the world," namely, how the Elbe on "Radio Hamburg" refers to a preference, a not inconsiderable knowledge gap revealed.

This happened on the third of August this year. In shops or at the station looking to get sometimes can not help but respond to that channel. Since the third of August was a Sunday, so it was looking for a station, as the auto-scan and stopped suddenly sounded the good old "Lotto King Karl" in the own four walls inside. In his usual Barmbek-Ba (r) sch-moderated tone of the musicians on his way, apparently not entirely unsympathetic new program "Radio Hamburg rocks", which takes 18 to 20 every Sunday clock run its course.
It must have been about 19:10 clock, as a "lottery" began to read a text that has been drawing attention to the happy hour cocktails in a Hamburg bar, because this time is, according to program schedule for "our tips for your leisure time" reserved . Whether this is pure act or event information as possible about upcoming events advertorial is another question. Well O-Ton "lottery":

And if you want the better to make a bit cozy tonight, then goes to the best in the "Tower Bar".

So far there is no objection. But now came a sentence, which sounds almost like a historical background information:

Formerly the water flowed here, now there are beer and cocktails.

Before "lottery" is now explicitly choose to - Ensure unconscious - uplift reinterpretation of historical facts, yet he clarified the benefits of the Bar:

Make yourself comfortable on the rattan palms between and is yet to 20:30 clock happy hour, which means that everything is [sic]'s cocktails at half price as for example a Strawberry Daiquiri for 3.75 €.

Finally, informed "lottery" the listener exactly where the climb sauce and supplied them with disinformation at the same time:

The bar can be found in the water tower on the grazing marsh in the second Rothenbaumchaussee

At this address there is actually known to the "Tower Bar". So what's the problem? This is that it is in the walls, in which this bar is located, by no means a "water tower", but rather a former air raid shelter is - a not entirely insignificant difference after all. So if it was flowing water, then perhaps in the form of sweat and tears, but certainly not for the purpose of water storage and water pressure generation. more>

From bunker-Sauer Street, corner Silcherstraße (Hamburg Bahrenfeld)

© www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2008 T his Bunker house is located in the Von-Sauer-Straße 42 in the Hamburg district of Bahr field. It is one of the last building before the A7, if you come from the east and travels out of town. The example shows this shelter, how can make bearable with such simple means the appearance of gray blocks, without denying history.
It is conceivable for a simple trompe l'oeil, which it invests less to disguise the true nature of his critical gaze long and earnestly, but rather the fact to avoid the roving eye too painful ugliness. © www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2008 The red color is gray facade of the former is not only a warmer look, but it integrates well into the series of adjacent, built of red brick houses. In the fake windows give her openness and brightness, and ensure that the block has a less monolithic. The large number of round vents were integrated geometrically well. The details of two human faces and a black cat that adorn three of the putative window assets, even to create some vibrancy. Like most other Hamburg bunker, is this also used as advertising space. At the moment these are two panels with varying advertising and a sustainable space rented. Also located on the roof of the bunker or a monstrous transmission / reception and mast, which can be accessed via a fixed ladder in the backyard. The facade is to be seen from the backyard and lush greenery everywhere. Whether and if so, how the bunker interior is used, the author is not known.

© www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2008 All in all we have here is a simple but fulfilling its purpose perfectly illusionistic painting. Why then are so many gray bunker? The horrors of war can only be due to the ugliness of our everyday surroundings make understandable. So why not to make the facades of at least warmer? It is unlikely that even a few of the Nazi brainwashing succumbs when bunker facades remain gray. On the contrary. © www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2008 Gray bunkers with Nazis serve more as an excellent template for their self-pitying and audacious thesis of the "Holocaust of bombs". The ugliness of many German cities today they attribute not to the Nazis, but to the Allies and enemies such as the commander in chief of the Royal Air Force Bomber Command, Arthur Harris, who is then often referred to as "Bomber Harris". But Harris did have not so far wrong that it was the German Reich, which had begun to make the civilian population to the target of terrorist attacks. This fact makes the carpet bombing by the Allies while not human, is yet massively the right of Germans questioned what the Allied air raids, from the context resolved as immoral denounce without mentioning just that Nazis and were British, the Gernika to 80 percent destroyed, deliberately fired on fleeing civilians and therefore this immorality in the young phenomenon of the air war in the first introduced. © www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2008 The ostensible strategic goal, however - a bridge that is - was not hit by a single bomb. Is also welcome to suggest that there were Nazis, Coventry, Rotterdam, Warsaw, London and Belgrade bombed.
To what extent are considering German extermination and concentration camps and killed several million people to be accused of all the Allies an immoral actions against the civilian population, is questionable anyway. Rather, the question arises as to whether the Allied bombing targeted the infrastructure of the industrial extermination camps the Nazis were able to stop killings. © www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2008 Finally, the Allies was announced by the decryption of Enigma messages from 1943, what was before him in the death camps.
In particular, leading to the extermination camps of railway lines could have been bombed. During a meeting at the British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden 6th July 1944 suggested Chaim Weizmann, representing the Jewish Agency to bomb the railway line Budapest-Auschwitz and the extermination facilities available within the camp. But the Allies were of the view that a quick victory over the Third Reich was the most effective means for concentration camp prisoners, which is why, despite initial openness to bombing a concentration camp infrastructure which ultimately refrained.

House with personality

© www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2007 T his building is located in Paris's first arrondissement on Rue de Rivoli, number 59, opposite the junction of the Rue des Déchargeurs.
After Crédit Lyonnais and the French had withdrawn from the number 59, November 1999, occupied the first three artists Kalex, Gaspard and Bruno (KGB) of the house. Very soon they were followed by about ten other artists. The house was at this time apparently in a dilapidated condition and offered with dead pigeons located therein, syringes and rubble as landfill dar. They started again and prepare to make the building habitable. The group as a collective characteristic took the name "Chez Robert, electron libre" and organized gallery openings, performance art and exhibitions, which were freely available to the public. The French State but presented a complaint against the squatters. The following sentence stipulated that the occupiers until 4 February 2000, the house would have to vacate. But their lawyer Florence diffr obtained a six-month extension of time. At the time, attacked the press on the subject, thus creating a wider public, which meant that the final verdict was again delayed. From politics to vote reported, with the phenomenon known as "Squart" one sympathized. Nevertheless, the fate of the project uncertain. In March 2001 local elections were held in Paris, from which emerged as the socialists winner, which gave the squatters a further delay because the left sympathized with them. The Socialist mayor Bertrand Delanoe now Christophe Girard of the Greens appointed to his cultural officials, who does everything since then to prevent the eviction. A survey commissioned by the Ministry of Culture count that "libre Chez Robert, Electron" with 40,000 visitors per year is the third most visited exhibition venue for contemporary art in Paris. © www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2007 Consequently Delanoë announced to buy back the building on behalf of the City of Paris and set to the legalization of works of art in motion. Along the way, it was necessary to establish that the squatter a non-profit association, which he did. This association is named "59 Rivoli". The art center is closed until the final decision. For more information and images of artworks currently inhabiting the house apparently 25 artists can be found on the homepage of "59 Rivoli" and on their blog , the last entry returned, however, is already about half a year 2 .
Among the more entertaining performers of "59 Rivoli" is obviously Jean-Luc Abiven whose home some surprising images are already holding. Very interesting are the sculptures and paintings on the side of Bazilio . Delightful are also the works of Dao, Deinki , Eve Clair , Francesco, Kalex, Malou, Mariko, Michel Vray, Thierry Hodebar. But even the works of those artists mentioned in this list does not always are worth a look, just like those people who were formerly active in the 59 Rue de Rivoli.

© www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2007 Men sculpture on the building of HFBK So it is not free from further ado, written in the windows of the vestibule of the College of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK). The text flanked the depiction of a woman who is in turn surrounded by the depiction of two men. The windows were created by the Austrian painter and graphic artist as well as employees of the Wiener Werkstätte Czeschka 1913th
In the same year the college moved into the building, designed by Fritz Schumacher. After the school had been bombed during the war, it was rebuilt in 1955, exemplary.
Have evidently survived the nouveau-like representations of a woman and a man from the year 1912, which were located in the courtyard to the street opposing integrated into the facade, so that they seem to look at each other. In addition, there is the sculpture of a woman in the front yard, which is surrounded by three children - two girls and one boy. While the girls seem to seek protection from the mother, it's almost as if the boy introduces himself protecting his mother.
Sculpture of a woman with children on the grounds of the HFBK Child on horse sculpture on a corner post on the railing of the HFBK Furthermore, is on a corner post of a side wall of a plastic, which is the same from all four perspectives, namely a boy on a horse under a canopy of roses. But that's not enough, the channel located towards the Eilbek facade is equipped with three other sculptures. These are a fabulous, kneeling on all fours with curly horse's mane and flaring nostrils, and also one on all fours, kneeling ram, which is also represented fabulously covered. Finally, the relief of a naked woman surrounded by fruit is on the facade.
Memorial tablet to Professor Friedrich Adler Unfortunately, one encounters here again on a plaque that will be remembered for one of the Nazi crimes. The Nazis have not been spared in their inhuman and totally mindless racial hatred just these high school. The panel noted on the citation that abducted from there to Auschwitz and murdered Professor Friedrich Adler is, would, moreover, as well as above-quoted poem also eminently suitable as a motto of the university:

our lives would be miserable if we were not indigenous to the imagination, the imagination.

Flight to Easter ...

© www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2007

T he picture shows the ruins of the Cistercian monastery in Nimbschen at Grimsby in Saxony seen from the northwest. You can see the outer walls of the chapter house and the convent building. The first floor was the dormitory. The monastery was founded in 1243 by Margrave Henry the Illustrious House of Wettin (1221-88), first near Torgau. The convent moved twice, 1250 to 1291 and finally to Grimsby after Nimbschen, directly to the hollow where the ruins can still be seen today. Legal protection for the monastery had already been incorporated in the Cistercian Order in 1244. Six years later the convent was in the Nimbschen "privilegium commune" of the Cistercian order of Pope Innocent IV granted. Regardless of the nuns were under the bishop of the diocese of Merseburg.
The nun Katharina von Bora in 1510 was received from their father after Nimbschen the convent, where she learned reading, writing and Latin. The Reformation ideas were also not immune to this monastery, over and influenced the nuns living there. Together with other nuns decided Katharina von Bora to escape. They asked for help, Luther himself, who sent a car to Easter 1523, in which the applicant swears finally escaped with the help of the nuns, aldermen Torgauer Leonhard Koppe.

Bunker 27/29 Hinrichs (Hamburg Hohenfelde)

T he Hinrichs is bunker in the street in Hamburg's Hohenfelde designed by the architect Ulrich Pierstorff from 1941 back 1 . In 1950 the bunker was "softened" and rebuilt, which were "38 one and two bedroom apartments for older people, single professionals and childless couples on low incomes' created 2 . In a subsequent modernization balconies were grown from metal. The facade was given a bright yellow coat and acting friendly. This building looks a passerby without appropriate expertise to be barely Bunkervorleben. A successful conversion, then, without aesthetic compromise.

Bunker Sillemstrasse (Eimsbüttel)

D he's bunker in the Sillemstrasse an excellent positive example of softening and reorganization, which is also managed and aesthetically. Here history is not denied, but integrated into the present. Thus it remains not a foreign body in everyday life. Rather, they merge to be but defaced with him without.

Fritz Schumacher

© www.espritdescalier.de - Stefan Fix, 2007 B is an an apologist of modern brick building, it pretty amazing that his tomb is not made of red bricks - that would have been only logical, especially given the fact that not only half of Hamburg is marked by this Schumacher's red brick modern (for the absolute advantage of the city ), but even the cemetery where he rests, not escaped unscathed. Both the crematorium at the Ohlsdorf cemetery and the chapel built to his designs, namely 13. Not least because of a skirted brick grave stone would have been appropriate?

Just in time for the National Socialists seized power Schumacher was forced to retire as chief architect of the city of Hamburg. Then he had the dubious pleasure of many of the buildings he designed in the debt of the Nazi bombing to see go under the Allies. That after the war he moved his residence from Hamburg to Lüneburg and Hamburg until his death in 1947, barely visited does not, therefore, just wonderful. We can be thankful that it has outlasted some of its monuments to war and leave the post-war Hamburg seem a lot less dull.

Bunker Henrietta Street, corner of school (Eimsbüttel)

This bunker can probably be counted every right to the group of specimens uglier. He is obviously as a carrier of wireless antennas. He is probably about World War II and the Cold War also provided as a "public shelter" as the sign to him besfestigte shows. That would mean that the bunkers are maintained with its ventilation system and will continue to learn and thus for an indefinite period probably no conversion in favor of aesthetics.
